FML
FML (FOR MY LADY): EXPERIMENTAL TYPOGRAPHY
Goal: The objective for this project was to analyze and interpret a dramatic narrative (e.g., screenplay, speech, song, poem, radio script, etc) in order to typographically convey the appropriate emotion, pacing, and intensity of the selected narrative. This project required an advanced level of understanding and interpretation of content expression through typography. It was intended to be a highly creative project and was meant to encourage experimental creativity.
Concept: My creative direction for this project was focused on a song titled FML, written by Kanye West. This song was featured on West’s seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo which also features his hit songs Famous, Ultralight Beam and Fade. I was deeply engaged to this song due to it’s minimalistic sound and heartfelt lyrics that express his loyalty to his wife, Kim Kardashian-West. It has a powerful build-up towards the end of the song, where West’s unique style of sampling, layering and auto-tune were heavily used. I took inspiration from that, and used typography to show case his style along with the emotion behind the song.
